The plane had just exploded.
It was enough to ruin anyone’s day. Even if they did make it away in mostly one piece.
Well…up until what happened next.
They’d only just made it back to their temporary hideout, covered in burns and needing stitches thanks to planes exploding unexpectedly. It upset Murdock that he’d lost his newest toy, so the team was looking forwards to getting back and having some distance from the pilot’s sulking.
So it was a bit of a surprise, walking into the building and finding a red headed teen racing around looking at anything and everything in sight. The fact that the boy was blurring as he raced around the room was the big surprise.
“Murdock. What did I tell you about the secret sauce?” Face had his disappointed look on.
“Gentleman.” Murdock sounded more sane and serious than the time he almost got shot in the head. “We have a Roadrunner.”
The redhead froze, well he was still twitching a little bit, but he was staring at them in shock.
There was a long silence, which was perfectly normal when four ex-rangers caught a kid in their current base, and well the speed thing was insane.
“Is this your warehouse? Only we didn’t see a name on it, but the bandages were great, we really needed those, and maybe you need them too.” He paused for breath, at the speed he was talking he needed it, plucking at his clothing in thought.
Come to think of it, that too large clothing looked really familiar.
“What are you doing here kid? Are you lost?” And there was Hannibal, always the voice of sanity, speaking slowly as he motioned the other men back.
“No, okay maybe a little, but not really. Rob said we needed someplace to rest, and this one was furnished! We really needed the clothing. Oh yeah! I’m K.F., who are you?”
“Murdock, old chap!” The pilot was moving forwards, vigorously shaking hands, before his team could stop him. “Best pilot in the world, on the run fugitives, and top curry chef.”
“Curry? Oh man I haven’t had curry in ages!” K.F.’s eyes were wide, golden cat eyes, in delight. “Do you do the really hot kind that burns holes through your stomach if you eat it too fast?”
“Is there any other kind?” Murdock affected huge eyes in shock, grinning just as widely. “I have secret sauce too!”
Face was rubbing his forehead, sometimes Murdock acted before thinking, but normally he didn’t blurt out everything to complete strangers. Normally.
“No secret sauce for anyone, Murdock.” Face said slowly. “Why don’t you talk with your new friend in the kitchen.”
“Sure Facey, lets make curry!”
“I don’t know if I’m supposed to make curry with strangers.” The teen blurred again, circling Murdock as he vibrated. “But the others are sleeping and they’ll be hungry.”
“Boss. Tell me I’m not seeing things.”
“He’s very fast.” Hannibal had his thinking face on, eyes flinty as he watched the too fast young man. “Gentleman, we have a very interesting young man here.”
“Boss,” Face was still speaking quietly, eyes on Murdock and the grinning teen, as he spoke. “He said others.”
“I heard. Face, B.A., search for his partners, quietly.”
“You got it, Boss man.”
“Hannibal,” B.A. eyed the quickly talking men, man and boy anyway, frowning hard. “We aint hurting no kids, right?”
“Don’t worry Corporal. Just make sure they aren’t hurt.”
“You got it.” Face slipped away easily, B.A. a few more solid steps behind him, as they walked out of the main area.
Hannibal stayed in place, watching as the young man met all of Murdock’s random thoughts with his own, his own eyes narrowing as the large golden ones never stopped moving around the room. Very watchful eyes, taking quick glances back at the colonel before sweeping the room.
That was pure training. No civilian was ever that watchful.
“What happened to your clothes, son?” Hannibal asked in-between the argument on deadliest fish.
“They got stolen.” K.F. nodded quickly. “There was this big explosion, and then everything went woosh, and then we woke up and people were stealing our clothes!”
“Were they really nice clothes? That happens. People always try to take my hat.” Murdock agreed quickly.
“Oh yeah, only Rob’s zapped them and they ran off, but he said we needed new ones anyway.” K.F. rolled his eyes, waving his hand, glancing sharply at the door where the other two had disappeared. “They are not going to be happy if you wake them up.”
“Are you friends hurt?” Hannibal asked instead, Murdock was pulling out cooking equipment in the corner of his eye, but golden eyes was back to staring at him in almost suspicion.
“Well S.B. broke his pinkie, I didn’t even think that was possible, and most of Rob’s hair was burned off. We told him not to get to close.” K.F. sighed, making the ‘what can you do’ gesture. “But we can still kick your asses if we need to.”
Murdock stopped, turning slowly, huge eyes filling with tears. Hannibal winced inwardly, as the lower lip started quivering.
“But I thought we were comrades! Against the world as one! Take down governments where they stand!”
“Aren’t governments supposed to be good?” K.F. asked, already zipping across the room to hug Murdock, mumbling reassuring words about good food, and conspiracies to take over the world.
“Not always kid.” Hannibal muttered softly, ignoring the interested looks from the two maniacs. “Not always. Put those away Murdock, we won’t have time for any cooking tonight.”
Murdock pouted, still doing as ordered, while K.F. watched him with bright eyes.
“Kid. Do you have anyone in the area to take care of you and your friends?”
“It’s just us, we can take care of ourselves!” Arms crossed quickly, one foot tapping away faster than Hannibal could see properly. “We’re the best team ever!”
Hannibal smirked at that, Murdock ignored him, still grumbling about food, and the need for lots of it. If they weren’t about to be on the run, he’d be laughing harder at Murdock’s pout.
“Boss.” Face appeared in the doorway, frowning instead of his normal half smile. “You mind extra company?”
“There a problem?” Hannibal’s eyebrow rose swiftly, Face wasn’t all that big on kids, but if someone was in trouble…
Behind him the redhead went stiff and watchful, Murdock watching in equal silence, as Face made a jerking motion. B.A. stepped out from behind him, leading two extra teenagers, more watchful and suspicious than the easy going redhead.
These were well trained soldiers. No matter his personal feelings, Hannibal could respect the apparent level of training they had. Looking between the, they probably were an amazing team.
“K.F.?” The shorter dark haired boy, looking sunburned and with ash left for hair, was the one in charge. That was the face of someone ready to risk all to protect his men.
“Situation normal, Captain!” K.F. saluted, looking like a guerrilla fighter in sweats, grinning widely at the rolled eyes.
“Situation FUBAR.” Murdock drawled, he saluted as well, so they both looked like guerilla fighters. “Permission to run and hide?”
“Denied.” Answering Murdock was all automatic these days, leaving Hannibal to eye the new arrivals.
The tallest boy didn’t look so bad, very tired as he yawned against the smaller one’s shoulder, but sure enough, one of his pinkies was bound. On the whole they didn’t look awful, just run down.
“K.F., S.B., let’s go.” The short one shifted, away from B.A., and towards the exit.
“Aww, but curry times! Hannibal they’d be fun!”
“The Captain does have a point.” Hannibal said slowly, as he met the young man’s eyes. “You seem to be in some trouble.”
“So do you.” Grey blue eyes took in the equally disheveled men, and the burnt smell lingering in the warehouse.
Odds were even on who the smell was coming from the most.
There was a harsh mechanical sound, the kind that screamed incoming danger, seven pairs of eyes jumping to the main door.
It exploded inwards, flashes of bright red and gold fire, arching shards of wood as the door disintegrated and the wall buckled. More explosions followed, sending the inhabitants careening away from the bombs.
Smoke filled the room, moving like movie fog, as it raced within. More explosions sounded, as the smoke hid everything from view, crashing sounds as the building started falling apart.
“Tim!” S.B. tackled the smaller teen, taking them both to the floor, K.F. rushing up against them, as more debris flew overhead.
“Move!” Hannibal roared, catching Murdock’s arm, pulling the other as they started racing for the other end of the building. B.A. and Face moved just as quickly, grabbing at the younger teens and shoving.
S.B. got up quickly with the hands on his arms, pulling Tim up and pushing him into K.F.’s arms, while he ran forwards. Letting K.F. drag Tim along, moving just slow enough to not run over S.B. The older teen passing Hannibal and Murdock, barreling through the far wall, as the others followed.
“Need help now?” Hannibal asked angrily, smoke curling out behind him, trying to be heard over the creaking and collapsing building.
“Hey! Those aren’t our guys!” K.F. protested loudly, still holding his friend up as he coughed on the smoke. “Our bad guys are ninjas! They aren’t so loud.”
“Ninjas? We should get Chinese.” Murdock coughed, hacking as more smoke moved across them. “Can we hire ninjas?”
“No.” Face put a hand against Hannibal’s chest, glancing at the younger men. “You’re on the verge of collapse. All of you. You really think you can get away from these guys? Even if they aren’t after you?”
“Sure we can!” K.F. grinned widely. “We got talent.”
“You’re talents falling over. Like dominoes.” Murdock noted, peering around Hannibal’s shoulder as K.F. took in his two team mates. “Want superglue for that?”
S.B. was resting weakly on the ground, and Tim was only held up by K.F.’s arm around his waist. K.F. nudged worriedly at Tim’s shoulder, patting at the ash covered head, and chewing on his lip. Another glance at his larger friend, eyes moving quickly, before he glanced back up, half grinning.
“Can I have shotgun?”
